Our journey begins in the ancient city of Salamis, a place that was once home to over 150,000 people in the 2nd century. Its impressive Roman theatre and gymnasium with thermal baths truly showcase the high standard of living from that era.
Just a short drive brings us to the walled city of Famagusta. After entering through its historic gates, we'll explore the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque, which was originally the Gothic-style St. Nicholas Cathedral, and you'll definitely admire its stunning architecture. You'll also get a panoramic view of Varosha, the eerie abandoned resort area often called the ‘ghost town’.
Monasteries, Castles, and Charming Harbors
Next, we head to Kyrenia. Our first stop there is the beautiful Bellapais Monastery, a 13th-century Gothic gem nestled in the foothills of the Kyrenia Mountains, famously featured in Lawrence Durrell’s Bitter Lemons of Cyprus. Afterward, we'll explore Kyrenia Castle and its Shipwreck Museum, home to the world’s oldest recovered trading vessel, an incredible artifact dating back 2,300 years! A leisurely walk through Kyrenia’s charming harbor is the perfect way to cap off this part of the tour.
Nicosia: Europe's Last Divided Capital
Our final stop is Nicosia, Europe's last divided capital. We'll enter the old city through Kyrenia Gate and explore the bustling Arasta Quarter and the majestic Selimiye Mosque (which was once St. Sophia Cathedral). We'll conclude our day at the historic Büyük Han, a beautifully restored Ottoman inn that's now a vibrant cultural hub. After enjoying a relaxing coffee there, we'll return you to our meeting point around 6 PM.
